Camp Greenwood is owned by Lake Michigan Presbytery in Portage, MI.  It is governed by an agency who members are committed to Christian camping and have seen the impact it can make on young lives.  Located in northeast Kent County, Camp Greenwood is situated on 240 wooded acres with frontage on 5 interconnected all sport lakes.  The camp provides year round opportunities for campers to experience God and His good creation.  It is a Christian camp whose mission is to build a community for all ages which encourages Christian growth, models acceptance of individual differences, and nurtures friendships in the out-of-doors as a place for encountering and enjoying God's good creation.

Greenwood's staff are committed Christians who go through an extensive background and character check.   Counselors have a minimum of 1 year of college with many majoring in the field of education and ministry.   The applicant must turn in a four page application, 3 references, one of whom must be a pastor and go through an extensive interiew process.   If accepted as a staff member, counselors go through a 1.5 staff training week dealing with subjects of Spiritual Formation, Child Development Characteristics, How to Lead Devotions, Successful Counseling and Behavior Management.  Staff training also covers CPR training, signs of heat exhaustion and water safety.  The camp has 2 staff members trained in the Red Cross Health Officer course meeting with parents at the time of registration.

  • Greg Hoekman - 3rd year - serves as Camp Director.  Greg has many years of working with youth as a high school teacher for 30 years and both as a volunteer and paid church youth worker.  He received his undergraduate degree in education from Calvin College and his masters degree from Western Michigan University. 

 

  • Rachel Warren - 2nd year - serving as Program Director and Health Officer. Rachel received her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Ferris State University, and is currently volunteering as the Junior High Youth Leader at her home church in Fenton. She is active in the church choir and also helps direct the children's choir. Rachel is currrently working as a Title 1 Math Teacher at Mt. Morris Junior High School. She also teaches swim lessons and lifeguards at a health club. She has had the opportunity to co-lead the Isle Royale backing packing trip, and has worked as a church volunteer with youth and children since she was a teenager. In her free time she enjoys yoga, music, hiking, and reading.

  

  • Kelly Hall - 2nd year - serving as Counselor.  Kelly is a 2010 graduate from Alma College with a major in Business and a minor in music.  She is a member of the Alma College Choir and a small a cappella group, Pretty in Plaid.  Kelly is a sister of the Phi Sigma Sigma sorority and is an active volunteer for Alma Public Schools Kid's Night Out program.  She is a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Holt and is excited to be back for her eighth summer at Camp Greenwood.

 

     
  • Rose Feldpausch - 2nd year - serving as Counselor and Health Officer.  Rose is currently a Junior at Saginaw Valley State University majoring in Nursing.  She has completed half of the nursing program and will graduate in December of 2011.  In May she will be attending a nursing studying aboard trip to India to learn different types of healing practices.  She is a resident assistant in the dorms where she lives where she performs monthly health and safety inspections, organizes a variety of community programs, and mentors college Freshmen.  Rose grew up on her family owned dairy farm where she learned to love working hard and the outdoors.  She is excited to come back to camp for another summer of fun.

 

  • Tricia Alley - 2nd year - serving as Counselor.  I grew up at the Military Academy at West Point NY, but moved to Hudsonville Michigan with my family 2.5 years ago.  I am finishing up my third year at Calvin College, studying Speech Pathology and Studio Art.  I love to learn, sing, draw, paint, write, and spend time with friends and family.  I am looking forward to another summer at Greenwood!!!

     
  • Teresa Larson - 2nd year - serving as Counselor.  Teresa is currently a freshman at Alma College majoring in elementary education and working towards an early childhood endorsement.  At college, she is very active in various musical ensembles, alternative spring break trips (EducationWorks), the Center for Responsible Leadership, Chapel, Bible studies, and is a sister of Phi Sigma Sigma. Teresa is a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Holt, and enjoys spending time with her family and friends. This will be her 13th summer at Camp Greenwood.

 

  • Wes Smith - 1st year - serving as Counselor. Wesley is a freshman at Saginaw Valley State University currently majoring in Liberal Arts focusing on Graphic Design, and minoring in History. He's an ordained Deacon within the Presbyterian Church and has been highly active in his home church in Fenton, Michigan. He's gone on four backpacking trips through Camp Greenwood and loves nature. He currently enjoys reading, writing and anything to do with music.

  • Brianna Huyck - 1st year - serving as counselor.   Bri is currently a junior at Alma College, majoring in biology with a minor in Spanish. She has been volunteering with Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring program for over a year and enjoys going on Alternative Break service trips. As a member of the Orientation Committee, she helps freshmen acclimate to college life and get to know each other. She is also a Phi Sigma Sigma sister and loves playing ultimate frisbee. Bri is from Grand Rapids and is a member of Central Christian Church (DOC).

  • TJ Piccolo - 1st year - serving as counselor.  T.J. is currently a sophomore studying Playwriting at Columbia College Chicago. He has helped with many vacation bible schools, been a part of many missions trips, and has served as a deacon for his home church, the First Presbyterian Church of Alma. In his free time, T.J. enjoys writing, playing tennis, and hanging with friends.

 

  • Dan Boice - 1st year - serving as counselor.  Dan is currently a Sophomore at Spring Hill College, a Jesuit college in Mobile, Alabama, majoring in Theology with a minor in Philosophy. He is very involved in Campus Ministry at Spring Hill as a member of several retreat-holding student groups and as key member of the liturgical choir. He enjoys going on service trips to nearby poor areas of Alabama to help the people still suffering from Hurricane Katrina, and as a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity he enjoys doing many philanthropy-based events to raise money for St. Jude Children's Hospital. Dan is from Dyersville, Iowa, and is a member of the Roman Catholic Church.

    • Thea Hoekman - 3rd year - serving as Director of Food Service.  In the off season Thea teaches 38 piano students in her home, directs a church choir, plays church organ and sings in a prominent Grand Rapids Choir.   Thea received her her undergrate degree from Calvin College in piano performance and her master degree from U of M in piano perfomance.  While she has a strong background in the field of music she also is very talented in a kitchen.  She has cooked for many spring break mission trips with over a 100 participants and recently served as food service coordinator for La Grave Avenue CRC college dinners. 

     

    • Jake Pixley - 2nd year - serves as support staff.  I am currently a senior at Gull Lake High School.  After high school i am thinking of going to college.  I teach the cherub worship service at my church.  I am very active in my church, I do as many mission trips as I can and I was an elder on session.  I also play guitar in the band for my church and I sing in the youth choir.  I like to listen to music and just jam out on my guitar!

     

    • Kaylin Edgar - 2nd year - serves as kitchen assistant.  Kaylin is a freshman at Delta College, and is working towards her degree in Elementary Education. She loves to write poems and listen to music. She doesn't know what she would do without either one but, most of all, Kaylin wouldn't know what to do without God. She also had the opportunity to participate in a mission trip to Ghana, were she was baptized. This is her 13th summer at Camp Greenwood.

     

    • Ian Henderson - 1st year - serves as support staff.
    • Jessica Brown - 1st year - serves as support staff. Jessica is a sophomore at Grand Valley State University majoring in English and Secondary Education. Jessica is actively involved in Campus Ministry at GVSU. She is from Lansing and is a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. She enjoys reading and singing. This will her her 11th summer at Camp Greenwood.
